The 2020 racing season was certainly a strange one. Here’s my recount of what happened with my racing season in 2020.
It started out in January with a very last-minute deal to join Rick Ware Racing / Eurointernational for the remainder of the Asian Le Mans Series, marking my 3rd consecutive year racing in the series. Despite missing the first round teammates Anthony Lazzaro, Phil Mulacek and myself grabbed 3rd in the LMP2-Am championship with a 2nd place finish in Australia, a controversial non-points-finish after leading nearly all of the race in Malaysia and then a win in Thailand.
Shortly after returning home from Asia Patrick Byrne and I joined K-PAX Racing for the GT World Challenge America season opener at Circuit of the Americas for what was supposed to be a full season driving the Bentley Continental GT3. Then COVID-19 hit and we all went into lock-down…
Lock-down was an interesting time filled with invaluable family time and a SIM-racing E-Sports adventure that was one for the books - and by that I mean one that we should only remember to learn lessons from! Let’s just say I’m much better at racing the real things - BUT, some moments of great fun were had by all.
The global shift certainly had its ramifications and sadly our K-PAX effort had to come to an end. Later during the pandemic racing had resumed under strict protocols and thankfully this allowed one more great opportunity to do what we love before 2020 was over - the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring!
Patrick Byrne, Don Yount and I capped off the year with a podium finish in the LMP2 class at the 12 Hours of Sebring! After many previous attempts driving for some great teams I finally grabbed my first podium by finishing 3rd with Performance Tech Motorsports in an Oreca 07 LMP2. And not shabby for Patrick’s first attempt, huh?
2020 was a year of adversity. Confusion, fear, change, patience, reflection, education, love, hope and more overwhelmed all of us at times. I am thankful for all of the wonderful opportunities I had this year; not just in racing, but in my family and in my community as well.
Here’s to a happy, healthy new year and a bright, safe future for all of us.
