Guy Cosmo travelled out west this past weekend to participate in the KONI Challenge Series Fountain Motorsports #127 BMW 330i,  and to join up with Kevin Doran and Memo Gidley in the #77 Feeds The Need Doran Racing Daytona Prototype in the Grand American Rolex Series at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

The Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series presented by Crown Royal Special Reserve U.S. Sports Car Invitational delivered by Luggage Express  and the KONI Challenge Series events  ran May 18-20.

Guy co-drove the #127 Fountain Motorsports BMW 330i finishing second place backing up his victory in the Grand-Am KONI Challenge Series at Iowa Speedway last month.

“Man, it was a great charge up to 2nd,” Cosmo said.  “ Once again Fountain Motorsports gave me a great car. With another few laps we would have been racing for the win.  The big thing with these cars is the momentum. They don’t have a lot of horsepower, but they handle really well and it’s really close racing. You just have to chip away at it lap after lap. Our BMW 330i was hooked up and the Fountain Motorsports crew performed flawless pit stops that actually gained us a few positions.”

Guy had a new co-driver for this event;

“VJ Mirzayan is a new teammate for me this weekend,” noted Guy. “Considering he’s never been with the team and never been in our car before, he did an outstanding job getting up to speed. He handed over the car to me in a great spot. He had a little slip at the beginning, jumping the start and getting a stop-and-go penalty, but he went from dead last all the way up to 10th when he handed it off to me. I was able to get to work from there. I was able to inch my way up to the front lap after lap, and like I said, I needed two more laps and I would have had him.”

“I just got a little bit greedy in the beginning,” Mirzayan said. “I pulled out of line, so we got a stop-and-go penalty. I just kind of kept cool and worked my way back to 10th. This is the closest racing I’ve ever done. This is like a dream day for me. The first time I got in a car ever was four years ago. I’m not talking about racing, just got in a car on the track. So, for me, to be here in four years on the podium, it is absolutely a dream come true. I can’t thank [Guy] Cosmo enough for being such an incredible teammate and instructor. He really helped me get up to pace really fast. This is the most unbelievable day of my life next to my kids being born. I want to thank the KONI Challenge for putting on such a great show, thank my sponsors and especially Fountain Motorsports for such a great car and team.”

But Cosmo’s weekend had just begun. He still had his hands full chasing down a pack of Daytona Prototype cars. Guy joined up with Kevin Doran and Memo Gidley for Sunday’s run through the hills of the Monterey Peninsula in the Doran Racing #77 Feeds the Need car.

“It was such a pleasure working with Kevin Doran and the Feeds The Need/Doran Racing team,” remarked Guy. “Kevin is really a first-class guy and he’s got to have one of the nicest crews I’ve ever worked with. And man are their pit-stops fast!”

“We had a few hiccups throughout practice this weekend,” added Guy. “That kept us off-track and put us behind the eight-ball to the rest of the field. The Daytona Prototype class is so competitive and so close that every minute of track time you can get is extremely valuable.”

“Memo and I had a good run in the race though,” Guy noted. “I felt good at the start and avoided a few incidents that happened right in front of me during my stint.  Actually, the race was the most laps I spent in the car all weekend. Even then, I was still getting quicker each lap.  Memo hopped in and did a great job. He worked his way through some shuffling around to pull off a top-ten for the #77 Kodak car.”

“I’m really impressed with the design and layout of the Doran JE4 chassis,” Guy said. “I think it’s the smartest DP chassis out there. I can see why this car was so dominant when the Prototype class first came about.  Kevin and his group have done a great job competing against some of the better-funded teams out there. As development continues on this car I guarantee it will sit on the podium again, and I’d love to help Kevin and Memo put it there.”

During the past few seasons, Cosmo has brought his talent and services to several of the top-tier prototype teams in the Grand American paddock. In 2006 Cosmo joined up with Finlay Motorsports filling in for an injured Memo Gidley in the #19 Playboy Uniden car. He was also instrumental in giving the Spirit of Daytona car it’s best run ever at Watkins Glen. And, of course there was the popular 2nd place finish garnered by Guy, Memo and Michael McDowell at Utah to close out the season.

Guy Cosmo Slated For Double Duty at Laguna Seca

Will Join Doran Racing Daytona Prototype Effort

1103819-589952-thumbnail.jpgIn addition to his scheduled driving duties in the KONI Challenge Series Fountain Motorsports #127 BMW 330i, Guy Cosmo will join Kevin Doran and Memo Gidley in the #77 Feeds The Need Doran Racing Daytona Prototype for the May 20th running of the Grand American Rolex Series event at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

Coming off the inaugural race  at Iowa Speedway,  where Guy and David Tuaty co-drove the #127 Fountain Motorsports BMW 330i to victory in the Grand-Am KONI Challenge Series event, Cosmo will head to Laguna Seca Mazda Raceway with a full workload on his plate.

“I am really looking forward to the KONI Challenge ST race at Laguna,” said Guy. “The Fountain Motorsports team has really come a long way since our first race together last year and after the win last week, they know what they are capable of.  The win at Iowa was extremely pleasing, but by no means an ego-trip.  We know how strong our competition is and everyone on the team realizes Fountain Motorsports is a young team with lots to learn.  While two-in-a-row would be nice, our main focus is on strong finishes and scoring points toward the championship.”

“I’ll have a new teammate in VJ Mirzayan this week, and look forward to working with him,” noted Guy. “He’s got great knowledge of Laguna Seca and knows BMWs really well.  Although he’s never been with the team or in our car before, I’m confident we’ll work well together and our #127 BMW will be a contender again this weekend.”
Cosmo Climbs Back Into A Prototype

During the past few seasons, Cosmo has brought his talent and services to several of the top-tier prototype teams in the Grand American paddock. In 2006 Cosmo joined up with Finlay Motorsports filling in for an injured Memo Gidley in the #19 Playboy Uniden car. He was also instrumental in giving the Spirit of Daytona car it’s best run ever at Watkins Glen. And, of course there was the popular 2nd place finish garnered by Guy, Memo and Michael McDowell at Utah to close out the season.

This week Guy will return to the prototype ranks driving with Memo Gidley in the #77 Doran Racing “Feeds The Need” car.

“I’m excited about joining Kevin and Memo,” said Guy. “Kevin and I have been interested in working together for years now, and this will finally be our opportunity to do so.  He’s acquired such a successful history in sports car racing and it’s an honor for any driver to drive for him.”

Cosmo and Gidley are not strangers when it comes to sharing a Daytona Prototype seat. They enjoyed a fantastic race to close out the season in 2006 at Miller Motorsports Park in Salt Lake City.

“Sharing the car with Memo Gidley makes the scenario that much better.  Memo is a fantastic driver as well as a truly good friend, and after our time together in the prototypes last year I know we will make a strong combination standing on the podium as we did last season.”

“2006 turned out to be a great season," said Cosmo, looking back. "Being chosen to drive the #19 Playboy/Uniden car both with Michael and Memo for six events and co-driving with Bobby Labonte at Spirit of Daytona Racing for three events in between was a terrific opportunity. I got to work with some really great people and managed to run nearly the entire season. In a field with so many of today’s best racing drivers, it was a blast running up front and mixing it up with them.”

“Coming on for this run with Doran will give me the opportunity to continue to demonstrate my talents to Grand Am teams and audiences,” continued Guy. “The Doran JE4 Daytona Prototype is the only  prototype marque in competition that I have not yet driven, so this opportunity is truly meaningful in gaining experience in all of the Daytona Prototypes out there.  This car won an impressive number of races, the Daytona Prototype Championship and the Rolex 24 since the inception of the prototype category. I’m eager to help Kevin, Memo and the guys on the Doran team to get the JE4 back to the front.”

Cosmo & Tuaty Take Victory in Inaugural Road Course Event at Iowa Speedway

1100458-785501-thumbnail.jpgNEWTON, Iowa (April 21, 2007) – In the first-ever race on the 1.3-mile road course at Iowa Speedway, Guy Cosmo and David Tuaty co-drove the no. 127 Fountain Motorsports BMW 330i to victory in Saturday’s Grand-Am KONI Challenge Series event.

Cosmo claimed the lead from Trevor Hopwood in the No. 95 Turner Motorsport BMW 330i in Turn 4 with 19 laps remaining and held off a charging Kuno Wittmer in the No. 31 Acura/Cobalt Friction/Alpine Stars Acura TSX to win by 0.306 seconds. It was Cosmo’s third career KONI Challenge Series class victory, but was his first since an ST I class win at Virginia International Raceway in 2003.

“We had a nice big lead after the second-to-last yellow,” Cosmo said. “We’d really stretched it out a little bit and gave me a nice comfort zone to just keep a good pace and not make any mistakes and keep going. Then that last yellow came out and I was thinking, ‘Man, I thought we had this one and I could conserve some energy for the next race,’ but that didn’t work out. Really, in that stage, all you’re doing is just driving the track and driving the car, and not worrying about anybody else that’s on the track with me. I just had to do what I do and do it every lap and not screw up. Fortunately, things worked out. It was a good plan, David gave me a great car and a great position and we got it all done.”

1100458-785504-thumbnail.jpgTuaty started from eighth on the grid and drove the opening stint in the race before turning the car over to Cosmo on Lap 47 of the 162-lap race. It was Tuaty’s second career KONI Challenge Series ST victory and his first win since the 2005 season-opener at Daytona International Speedway.

“We knew this was a long race and we had to keep the car, so Guy and I decided while we were testing this weekend to keep the car consistent,” Tuaty said. “We knew the lap times we could do, and we could do it all race long. That’s what we did. Towards the end, it actually surprised both Guy and I when he was turning some really fast laps that were in the top three for the weekend. We weren’t concentrating on that, we were just concentrating on being fast enough to not go off the pace. Guy and I worked really hard on the setup of the car. We were missing a few horsepower on the other cars, but this is a short track and handling is key and being there at the end. Some guys did some boneheaded moves at the beginning that took them out at the beginning that took them out for no reason. We tried to avoid all that. At the end, Guy was having a lot of pressure from the Mazda and Kuno, and they were worrying me. But Guy kept it there. He’s a fantastic co-driver. I couldn’t ask for more.”

Canadian brothers Nick and Kuno Wittmer wound up second in the No. 31 machine. Nick started the race from the pole position and led throughout his 104-lap driving stint before pitting under green flag conditions to turn the car over to Kuno. That strategy forced the No. 31 machine off the lead lap for a time, but Kuno clawed his way back and came within a whisker of scoring the victory.

“We did qualify first, so we knew we had a fast car, but at the beginning of the race, we had a plan to just keep it consistent and keep it up front and battle it out at the end like we did,” Nick Wittmer said. “We didn’t think we were going to go down that far, and at the end we got a little pit strategy that wasn’t that good. We came in under the green flag and the other guys came in on the yellow, so that didn’t help us that much. We still had a great car. The Acura was amazing, and the Cobalt Brakes were amazing too. I could brake really good with those. I think I led the whole hour and 45 minutes before I came in, and the car was amazing for the whole first half I did.”

“Guy is a proven driver, and I’m really, really glad to race against guys like Guy at the end,” added Kuno Wittmer. “I knew I could stick my nose under him and he wouldn’t chop me off. He’s a great guy. I wouldn’t take him out. I’m not that kind of guy either. Again, all thanks to our Cobalt Brakes. That’s why we led the most laps today. It’s due to them. The Acura TSX was a really good car today. I mean, we were running qualifying times at the end, and it just proves that this series is really, really competitive. It was a great job for the guys and really thanks to Acura and Cobalt.”

Adam Burrows and Hopwood took their second consecutive podium result with a third-place run in the No. 95 BMW, and took over the ST class points lead after three of 12 races complete. Burrows and Hopwood—who led nine laps before incurring a drive-through penalty for breaking the pit lane speed limit on his final stop—now lead with 86 points apiece, three more than No. 76 Compass360.com/Skunk2/Hawk Brakes Acura TSX co-drivers Karl Thomson and Billy Johnson.

“We missed a lot of the test day yesterday with a motor problem but the Turner guys did an amazing job to get a new engine in the car, change the clutch, and put in new brakes so we could get out today,” said Burrows. “My main objective for the race was to get up into the top three before turning the car over to Trevor. Even though I didn’t get a stellar start, I managed to work my way up to third before the pit stop. After the driver change, Trevor did another excellent job to get us back up onto the podium for the second week in a row. Considering the challenges that we had this weekend, I couldn’t be happier about the results.”

“The strategy the Turner Motorsport guys had was just perfect,” added Hopwood. “I made a mistake coming on to pit lane and got a penalty and that probably cost us the race but it’s great to get on the podium again. It’s early yet in the season but its great to get on top in the championship and hopefully we can keep that momentum up. I’m really excited about driving this Turner BMW 330 at Laguna in a few weeks.”

Hopwood and Burrows were the first of four cars to benefit from a one-minute post-race penalty on the No. 01 Scada Pack/Georgian Bay Motorsports Chevrolet Cobalt of co-drivers Eric Curran and Jamie Holtom. On the final lap, Curran made contact in Turn 4 with David Haskell in the No. 68 SpeedSource Mazda RX-8 while battling for third place, sending Haskell spinning off-course.

As a result, Hopwood and Burrows moved to third, followed by Sam Schultz and Seth Thomas in the No. 126 Trackmasters/Fountain Motorsports BMW 330i in fourth, Haskell and Scott Schlesinger in fifth, and Christian Miller—who led four laps—and Glenn Bocchino sixth in the No. 32 Acura/Cobalt Friction/Alpine Stars TSX. Curran and Holtom wound up seventh after the penalty.

Todd Buras and Carlos Garcia finished eighth in the No. 56 BSI Racing/Team Garcia Racing Mazda MX-5, with Jose Armengol and Dan Allen ninth in the No. 69 Mondial Forwarding/Freedom Harley-Davidson Mazda RX-8, and Joe Sahlen and Will Nonnamaker completing the top 10 in the No. 03 Team Sahlen/HRPWorld.com Dodge SRT4.
