Braselton, Ga. (6 October 2017) – As the 2017 IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge season came to a close at TeamTGM’s home track of Road Atlanta on Friday, the team took a fifth place finish after two hours of hard racing.
With team leader Ted Giovanis looking on as he works through his recovery from the injury he suffered at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, Hugh Plumb and Guy Cosmo each executed well during their respective stints at the controls of the No. 4 Camp Boggy Creek / JKTG Foundation Porsche Cayman GT4 MR.
Plumb opened the race from the third row after starting fifth. He remained among the top-five during his two stints through the first hour of the race.
When the second of three full course cautions was displayed just over an hour into the race, the team called Plumb to pit lane for a full service pit stop and a driver change. Cosmo returned to the fray fifth in line when the field went back to green with 47 minutes to go.
He made his way up to fourth and methodically worked his way up to the third place McLaren machine and ran right behind in the final laps. Unfortunately, the higher horsepower Mustang took advantage of that fight and took over the fourth place position.
Shortly thereafter, the field was once again slowed by a full course caution and ultimately finished under the caution - leaving TeamTGM to rue what might have been if the race had gone back to green for the final few laps.
“I think we might have had something for them on the restart if we had gone back to green, but that’s the way the race played out and we’ll take a top-five,” said Cosmo. “Come race day, the TGM guys always get the car set up rock solid. We were concerned going into the race that we didn't quite have the set up and once again these boys nailed it. There are strengths and weaknesses to the different cars out there. We were so good for so much of the track except for where the easiest passing zones were. In that regard, there was just no way that I could hold them (the higher horsepower cars) off. I am proud of our finish and we had two great pit stops. Next year we are going to come back even stronger. We just can't thank Ted Giovanis enough for this awesome team and for his passion for racing.”
"We were towards the front of the field doing whatever we could out there,” added Plumb. “It wasn’t so much about getting the best result today because we didn't have the horsepower that the frontrunners had. But apart from that, we had great pit stops and the crew did a fantastic job. As I have said all year long, we truly do have the best team in the paddock and the best team owner in the paddock. Thank you to Ted Giovanis for assembling such an amazing group. Look out for TeamTGM next year!"
Team Owner and driver Ted Giovanis looks forward to his return behind the wheel of a race car during the off season, and he couldn’t have been more pleased with how his team delivered in the final race of the year.
"Both Guy (Cosmo) and Hugh (Plumb) drove a great race today,” said Giovanis. “There were times when Guy was turning the fastest laps on the track there toward the end of the race, so we knew that he would catch up even when the field seemed to be pulling away. We were in the hunt and showed performance which looks good for next year. The race overall was pretty good. We had one little mess up during a pit stop with an air gun failing – but our guys are the best in the business and quickly recovered with Jordan (Nix, rear tire changer) quickly handing his air gun up to John (Terry, front tire changer) as a replacement.”
