Good Start But Tough Finish for Cosmo with Next Generation at Mid-Ohio

(Lexington, OH) 24 June 2009— After driving a Daytona Prototype in a select schedule of Rolex Sports Car Series events for Spirit of Daytona Racing, Guy Cosmo had almost forgotten how much fun could be had racing in Grand-Am KONI Sports Car Challenge. Almost.

But his grin was back after getting behind the wheel of the No. 129 Next Generation Motorsports BMW 330i for Sunday’s Sports Tuner (ST) class round for the EMCO Gears Classic at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. Teaming with Puerto Rico’s fastest export, Bryan Ortiz, Cosmo powered the BMW to 8th on the grid in Saturday’s morning qualifying session.

Making the most of the car’s balanced handling and strong braking, Cosmo bolted to third in the order in the early going before the pit rotations saw him move to the front for two laps.

“It was great to get back in this car and be able to move up so quickly,” said Cosmo. “These guys lean on each other pretty hard and I was having a blast out there. This track is one of the best to race on. It’s really technical so you really have to pick your battles and not get too impatient on the back side.”

As Cosmo hit the Next Generation fuel window, he was called into the pits from the lead to turn the machine over to Ortiz, who was also in GS class action on Saturday. But before he was even done taking off his helmet, Cosmo’s day turned from good to bad as a pit miscue saw the No. 129 leaving the pits before the service was complete, generating a drive-through penalty for the car.

Running a lap down from the leader, the day turned even worse as damage from on-track debris forced the machine into the pits and behind the wall after it was determined that the car was unsafe to have on track when the windshield shattered.

“It was looking like we’d be in position to maybe fight for a podium, so it’s obviously disappointing that Bryan didn’t get the chance to do that,” said Cosmo. “But I think we showed that this Next Generation car has some fight in it, and I really had a good time out there and didn’t really want to come in and turn the car over!”

Cosmo will be back in racing action in the Brumos Porsche 250 as he returns to Rolex competition behind the wheel of the No. 09 Spirit of Daytona Racing Coyote/Porsche V8.

Cosmo and Russell Take 11th for Spirit of Daytona Racing at Mid-Ohio

(Mansfield, OH) 20 June 09 – After running in the top five in the opening stages of the ECMO Gears Classic presented by Key Bank at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, Guy Cosmo and Scott Russell combined for a run to 11th in the No. 09 No. 09 Porsche V8-powered Coyote on Saturday.

Cosmo started the race from seventh on the combined Daytona Prototype and GT-Class grid, and was right in the thick of the action in the opening stages of the two hour and 45-minute race, moving up to fifth position by the fifth lap moving up one more spot to fourth before turning the car over to Russell, who ran a long middle stint before turning the car back over to Cosmo to take to the checkered flag.

Russell’s run showed the progress the motorcycle champ has made so far in his transition from two wheels to four.

“The car had a mid-corner push, so I had to be patient with it,” said Russell. “But once I got used to it, it felt pretty good. I’m still learning, but that’s the best run I’ve had this car yet, so I’m really happy with the race and really looking forward to going back to Daytona and putting the experience I’ve gained since the 24 to use. It’s like going home again to race there, so it can’t come soon enough for me!”

The opening run up front was a promising start to the race, which marked the mid-point of the Rolex Sports Car Series season. The No. 09 Coyote, which has countless miles in Rolex competition, had two driver changes as Cosmo took to the cockpit for the final stint on the day.

“It was great to run up front there and mix it up with the big dogs,” said Cosmo. “It was a really intense, and a fun race to run. The car was just like it tends to be-very consistent. It didn’t change at all through the run and that gave me more confidence with the car. This is one of my favorite places to race because there is a little bit of everything here and you have so much going on, almost the entire lap, so this was a fun day today. We’d have loved to have been in the top ten, but we had a little problem in the pits and that was just enough to keep us from that, but it’s still a solid run for us today.”

Spirit of Daytona Racing has been hard at work, preparing the 09 machine for racing while also making sure the No. 90 is ready to go in testing in the coming days.

“We figured that we had a top-ten car, and even though we just missed that today, it was a pretty good result on the day,” said team owner Troy Flis. “The Metro Motorsports Guys did a great job and Guy and Scott did as well. Scott got a lot of seat time this weekend and during the race it really showed so we’re proud of how he keeps progressing out there. Hopefully things go well with the test on Monday and that we have some good news to announce soon!”

The team will be back in racing action in two weeks’ time as part of the Brumos 250 event at the high-banked home of the team, Daytona International Speedway.

Cosmo Takes 7th in Qualifying for Spirit of Daytona Racing

(Mansfield, OH) 19 June 09 – Guy Cosmo got nearly everything that he could possibly wrestle out of the Spirit of Daytona Racing No. 09 Porsche V8-powered Coyote in qualifying for Saturday’s EMCO Gears Classic presented by Key Bank, but caught traffic on his last lap flyer and wasn’t able to improve on his 7th position after setting a fast lap time of 1:19.495-seconds at Mid-Ohio.

Cosmo will start the 2 hour and 45-minute event for round 6 of the 2009 Rolex Sports Car Series season before turning the driving duties over to co-driver Scott Russell. The qualifying result is the second-best qualifying outing of the 2009 Rolex Sports Car Series season for the duo as the team looks to once again visit victory lane at Mid-Ohio, having scored a victory in AGT competition in 2000.

The lap was the quickest of the weekend so far for the AMA-liveried Coyote as Cosmo was well into the top-five for most of the 15-minute session.

“We made a lot of improvement with the car and I think we made the right choices with the set-up today, ” said Cosmo. “It took a little bit of time to get the tires up to temperature, but once they did the car was much better. I was in the top five for most of the session, and left a gap for another run at the end but just caught traffic on the very last lap. So that was really frustrating! But it was still a pretty good day for us and now we can look ahead to moving up in the race. Scott’s been doing well in the car and who knows what is going to happen with the weather, so everyone is ready to go.”

The EMCO Gears Classic presented by KEY Bank will be carried LIVE on SPEED starting at 5:00 PM EST as the team seeks the checkered flag on Saturday night, while working toward that first green flag for the No. 90 on Monday.

Spirit of Daytona Racing Has Two Targets at Mid-Ohio

Double-duty weekend as No. 09 races, with No. 90 ready to test

Note: Watch Spirit of Daytona Racing driver Guy Cosmo talk about the new Coyote here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ucgOZ7jQX8&feature=player_embedded

(Daytona Beach, FL) 18 June 09 – Spirit of Daytona Racing will be pushing two targets this weekend as the Rolex Sports Car Series convenes for round 6 of the 2009 season at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course for the EMCO Gears Classic presented by Key Bank. The track is one that has fond memories for the Daytona Beach-based team, having scored a victory there in Grand-Am’s AGT class in the 2000 event.

The first goal will be to see the No. 09 Porsche V8-powered Coyote score as strong a result as possible with drivers Guy Cosmo and Scott Russell pushing the venerable No. 09 machine to the limit in Saturday evenings 2 hour and 45-minute race into the sunset.

The second goal will be to make the most of the Rolex Series open test on Monday as the newest-specification Coyote, the Spirit of Daytona Racing No. 90, continues to be developed by Sprit of Daytona Racing in advance of its Rolex racing debut.

While the team is looking forward to the future with the new No. 90 machine, there is no downplaying the current, particularly this weekend at Mid-Ohio. Last season, the Coyote-Porsche V8 machine showed some significant speed as Cosmo wrestled the combination around the 2.258-mile circuit in a heavy downpour, and once again showed the strength of the package in low-grip situations.

So with another possible rainy race this Saturday, Cosmo is understandably looking forward to the weekend.

“We had a pretty strong run going last year at Mid-Ohio even though the conditions were so lousy,” said Cosmo, who took race wins at Mid-Ohio in formula car competition before moving into the sports car racing ranks. “Even though the team is pushing as hard as possible to get the new Coyote all set to go racing, we know we could have the opportunity to get a strong result with the 09. We were encouraged with what the new Coyote was able to do right out of the box when we tested at Watkins Glen, so hopefully we can have a good weekend all around out at Mid-Ohio with a good race and a productive test.”

Cosmo will be teaming up once again with motorcycle legend Scott Russell, who has impressed in his transition from two wheels to four so far in 2009, and will look to keep growing his pace as he takes on the drivers favorite Mid-Ohio circuit.

“Every time I get out there, I just want to keep getting better and better and take steps forward,” said Russell. “I know that I’m not going to get caught up with Guy all at once as far as speed, so I have to remind myself a little bit to be more patient. But every time I get in the car, I’m learning something new and having a little bit more fun! Hopefully we can just keep that going this weekend at Mid-Ohio.”

With the 09 car moving rapidly toward the end of its development cycle as the 90 picks up pace with its, the dual programs could prove too much to handle for some organizations. But not Spirit of Daytona, which has stepped up every aspect of the operation to take on the challenge, and opportunity, that exists with the new-specification machine.

“When we laid out our plans for the 2009 season, we knew that we’d have a period of transition like this although we thought it’d be happening earlier in the season,” said team owner Troy Flis. “But some things that were out of our control have changed the schedule, but we’re just adapting our development schedule to make the most use of the track time that we have, like this test we have on Monday.

“Going up against some of the other chassis that have so many teams racing and developing and testing them is a huge challenge, but we’re really encouraged about what we’ve seen so far out of this car. It’s exciting to be part of something like this, and I’m just proud of how this team has responded to the program. We’re all looking forward to seeing this car take a green flag in a Rolex race, but we also want to make sure we’ve got all our I’s dotted and T’s crossed before we get out there and go racing.”

The EMCO Gears Classic presented by KEY Bank will be carried LIVE on SPEED starting at 5:00 PM EST as the team seeks the checkered flag on Saturday night, while working toward that first green flag for the No. 90 on Monday.

Cosmo Interview Featured at Grand-Am.com

Guy Cosmo, driver of the No. 09 Spirit of Daytona Racing Porsche Coyote, talks about the new No. 90 car, which the team tested at Watkins Glen International.

Short Day At Watkins Glen for Spirit of Daytona Racing

WATKINS GLEN, NY (June 6, 2009) -- The Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen is one of the cornerstone events on the Rolex Sports Car Series schedule, with over 40 years of racing at the fabled upstate New York facility. Campaigning the AMA-liveried No. 09 Porsche V8-Coyote combination with Guy Cosmo, Antonio Garcia, and Scott Russell entered as drivers, Spirit of Daytona Racing was looking to be a part of that rich history with a strong finish in the 2009 running of the event, but the team’s day was cut short after transmission issues sidelined the effort.

Cosmo, who qualified the black and gold Daytona Prototype on the 7th row, had moved up into the top ten before the race had even reached the one hour mark. But unfortunately, the campaign was halted as Cosmo rolled the car back behind the wall after losing drive.

“I was glad that this happened in a place where I was able to get back to the pits at least and not have to be stranded out there on course,” said Cosmo. “I just lost drive and I’m sure the team will sort out what exactly when wrong, but I think it was transmission-related. This is really disappointing because we were all set to just set a good pace and keep putting the laps in and putting ourselves in a position for a strong finish at the end. But at least we are not done for the weekend!”

Indeed, the weekend is not over for the team, as the newest member of the racing family, an all-new built Coyote chassis mated to the Porsche-based V8 powerplant, will hit the track in testing on Sunday. The test is the first full day of testing for the newly completed machine, which the team is looking forward to developing in advance of deploying it into Rolex Sports Car Series race action.

“Today didn’t go at all as we were hoping it would,” said team owner Troy Flis. “This car has been bullet proof through the years, so this was obviously a surprise for us to have this failure. While we would have liked to get back out there, now we’ll just make the most of this extra time to prepare the (new chassis) number 90 for tomorrow. It’s early days with that car, but we’re really looking forward to learning as much as we can with it. This race result is really tough to take, but at least we can come back to the track tomorrow and get to work on the new car so that’s the positive we can take out of today.”

Spirit of Daytona Racing will test the all-new No. 90 on Sunday, and will race again in two weeks at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.

Spirit of Daytona Racing 12th on Watkins Glen Grid

Ready to race with Porsche V8-Coyote

WATKINS GLEN, NY (June 5, 2009) --Guy Cosmo will start the AMA-liveried No. 09 Porsche V8-Coyote from the sixth row for Spirit of Daytona Racing in Saturday’s Sahlen’s 6 Hours of the Glen after posting a fast lap time of 1:43.143-seconds in qualifying at Watkins Glen International on Friday.

Saturday’s 6-hour enduro will see the AMA machine co-driven by Cosmo as well as Scott Russell and Antonio Garcia as the Rolex Sports Car Series makes its first visit of the season to the fabled upstate New York track.

Cosmo made the most of every lap during the 15-minute session, setting a quick time and then improving lap after lap to set his quickest time just before the checkered flag fell to close out the session.

“It took some time for the fronts to come in so we had a lot of push initially,” said Cosmo, who considers Watkins Glen to be his home track. “But the car got better as the session went on so I just tried to make the most of it. We were hoping to be a little bit closer to the front at the start, but this is a long race and we’re just going to chip away at it tomorrow for six hours and see where we end up. We’ve seen everything at this race with rain and heat and everything in between, so we’re just going to look for a clean start and then we’ll get to work tomorrow.”

SPEED Will carry live coverage of the Sahlen’s 6 Hours of the Glen starting at 2:00 PM ET.

Cosmo Looking Forward to Weekend at The Glen

(Watkins Glen, NY) 4 June 2009—With a big Rolex Sports Car Series endurance event on a classic road course, a new teammate, a new race car, and a run in front of some friends and family, Guy Cosmo has a lot to look forward to this weekend.

Cosmo, who steered to the front in the last Rolex Sports Car Series event he ran in the No. 09 Spirit of Daytona Porsche V8-Coyote with co-driver Scott Russell, will return to the cockpit of the unique motor and chassis combination this weekend for the Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen for Spirit of Daytona Racing.

Cosmo will once again team with Russell, but there will also be a third member of the driving roster as well as Rolex 24 At Daytona Champion Antonio Garcia has also joined the effort.

The track, the 3.4-mile “long course” at Watkins Glen, is one that Cosmo has long called home, having grown up on Long Island.

“I’m really looking forward to getting back up to the Glen this weekend,” said Cosmo, who has raced nearly everything from F2000 to KONI cars on the track. “Scott has been doing a great job and keeps getting better very time he goes out so I know he’s going to love running at the Glen. And of course having someone with the background that Antonio has as part of the team is only going to make us stronger so hopefully we can give this 09 car a great strong run.”

As much as he is looking forward to getting to take on the challenge of the upstate endurance event, Cosmo is also excited about what will follow, as the team will be back in action on Sunday with the brand-new specification Coyote chassis, which will also be mated to the stout Porsche V8-

“Obviously I’m a racer so the biggest thing about the weekend is the 6 hour, but I can’t help but also be excited about getting in the new car on Sunday. We had a shakedown test and it ran perfectly so I am just really excited about getting the development ball rolling with this new car and seeing how much we can get out of it. It has a lot of potential and the opportunity to be a part of something like this is something I’m really excited about. Hopefully we can make some good strides in testing and then be strong right off the truck when we race it.”

The Sahlen’s 6 Hour will be broadcast live on SPEED starting at 2 PM EDT on Saturday.

Cosmo and Baker Rise to the Challenge at Miller Motorsports Park

photo by John Thawley Setting the fastest laps in class along the way, Guy Cosmo and co-driver John Baker, took the #47 Orbit Racing GT3 Porsche Challenge car to a second place finish for the inaugural running of the Challenge class at the 2009 American Le Mans Series, Larry H. Miller Dealerships Utah Grand Prix. The even was held at Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, Utah on Sunday, May 17, 2009.

"Our goal was to come out here and have fun," said Cosmo, following the race. "We did just that. This was a great opportunity for my co-driver. He was out their mixing it up with top tier drivers and did an outstanding job. For me, it was terrific being back in the ALMS."

"While my past experience in the series was running at the top of the food chain in the prototypes, it was a fantastic exercise running in traffic and dealing with guys lapping you standing still," Cosmo added with a laugh. "Seriously, though... we had a ball and I know we'll be doing a few more of these."

"Orbit Racing did a great job preparing the car and the pit stops were great," noted Cosmo. "We were closing on the leaders toward the end of the race, but having started too far back, we just ran out of time. Congratulations to Martin and Melanies Snow, the were really dialed in."

In post race inspection, IMSA officials determined the car was 1.5mm too low at the right front corner and the #47 car was disqualified.

Earlier this year, IMSA and the American Le Mans Series announced the formation of the Challenge class as an effort to promote the brightest and best of a new generation of sports car drivers. The Challenge class will compete with the American Le Mans Series for five races in 2009.

To be eligible for selection by the sanctioning body (IMSA), drivers and teams must have had notable success for at least a year within GT3 level of racing. Teams may only field Porsche 911 GT3 Cup cars from the Platinum class of the Patrón GT3 Challenge by Yokohama, which is supplying the spec tire for both its championship and the Challenge class.

Certain technical regulations for the American Le Mans Series’ GT2 class will apply for Challenge entries, most notably rules governing refueling. Sporting regulations for the Challenge class also differ slightly from GT2. The number of crew members allowed over the wall during a pit stop is reduced, and only two members with only one wheel gun are allowed to change tires per stop. Teams also will have to make at least one stop to change all four tires at one point during the race.

The distribution of points will follow the American Le Mans Series championship. In a two-hour, 45-minute “sprint” format, class winners receive 20 points, runners-up 16, third-place 13 and down the line to 1 point for 10th place. A Challenge entry is limited to three drivers per car; however all competitors who drive an entry during the season will share the points awarded to that entry throughout the season. To score points, an entry must complete 70 percent of the overall race winner’s distance.

Drive time requirements from other Series classes apply - a two-hour maximum per competitor at Utah with each driver required to complete at least 10 laps.

Guy Cosmo is one of the most successful and versatile young racing drivers of his day. Guy is recognized as a first-class professional racer in the sports car road racing industry, having won the 2005 American Le Mans Series Rookie of the Year award and positioning himself as a proven front-runner in the Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series Daytona Prototype category. Guy's success stems from supportive family, friends and fans that have helped him through race wins and championships from Kart Racing, Formula Ford, Formula 2000, Star Mazda and Toyota Atlantic, to his professional endeavors in the Grand-Am and American Le Mans Series.

The next round of the American Le Mans Series is the American Le Mans Northeast Grand Prix from Lime Rock Park. The race is scheduled for 2:05 p.m. EDT on Saturday, July 18. The race will air live on SPEED. American Le Mans Radio and Live Timing & Scoring will be available on Racehub at americanlemans.com. You also can follow the Series on Twitter.
