“Put me in, coach!”
(Daytona Beach, FL) 19 January 09—Guy Cosmo will once again be driving in the Rolex 24 At Daytona with Spirit of Daytona Racing as the Palm Beach, Florida-based racer will join a trio of motorcycle champions for the twice around the clock classic next weekend.
Driving a Porsche V8-powered Coyote chassis, Cosmo will be teamed with Jeff Ward, Jason Pridmore, and Scott Russell. While his three co-drivers are legends in the motorcycle ranks, with scores of AMA championship titles to their credit, the threesome is making their first Daytona Prototype start in the biggest test of man and machine.
Cosmo is no stranger to his co-drivers, having been tapped to serve as set-up driver and coach in several tests leading up to the big event. He was expecting to play that same role right through the running of the race, but instead will be suiting up to do duty as a co-driver as the team looks to not only score a strong result in the 24, but to also continue the development of the machine as the Rolex Sports Car Series season develops.
“I’m really happy to be driving in this race for Spirit of Daytona Racing,” said Cosmo. “We made a lot of progress during the test and the guys (co-drivers Ward, Pridmore, and Russell) have soaked everything up and shown their colors as being true champions. I just want to help make sure we are where we need to be set-up wise, and then get out so they get as much track time as possible before the race starts. They are still looking to get more seat time and keep building that confidence, so hopefully they will get more than enough come race time! I was happy to spot for the guys, but this is an even better opportunity for me and I’m just looking forward to a long two days in the office this weekend!”
Thursday, January 22 will kick the race activities off with practice and qualifying, with the race taking the green flag at 3:30 PM on Saturday. FOX will carry live coverage of the opening stages of the race before handing off to SPEED to continue the live broadcast.
