BGB Motorsports 996 Highest Finishing Porsche at Daytona
(Daytona Beach, Florida – February 7, 2005) Guy Cosmo and teammate Mark Plummer fought their way through the most competitive Grand-Am Cup field to date to finish fifth in this weekend’s Grand-Am Cup 200 at Daytona International Speedway. Driving their #38 BGB Motorsports Porsche 996, Cosmo and Plummer posted the highest finishing position for a Porsche amongst a strong brigade of new GS class entries.
Cosmo spent the weekend sharing his time between the BGB Porsche and the Apple Motorsports Rolex GT Porsche entry for the upcoming 43rd Annual Rolex 24 at Daytona. While Cosmo had just finished qualifying the Apple car, teammate Mark Plummer took to his traditional qualifying duties. Mark placed the BGB Porsche twelfth in the Grand Sport class, a feat in itself as thirteen of the top fifteen qualifying positions were claimed by the dominant BMW M3’s and the new Ford Mustang GT entries.
Plummer, just 21 years of age, once again proved his status as Grand-Am Cup’s rising star with an impressive start and steadily worked his way through the field. BGB’s keen pit strategy required just one pit stop during the 200 miles for fuel, tires and Cosmo’s turn behind the wheel. Cosmo took advantage of his fresh tires and began his drive to the front, setting the team’s fastest-ever lap at a 2:05.738 on his way to claiming fifth place in the 75-car Grand-Am Cup field.
“Not a bad way to start off the season” stated Cosmo. “Mark did an outstanding job starting the car and I was able to bring it home from there. I love driving with this kid. We clearly didn’t have the speed to contend with the Mustangs or BMW’s for this race, but I’m sure we’ll see some changes by Santo Domingo. We’re confident our BGB Porsche will be the car to beat by the season’s end.”
The Grand-Am Cup 200 will be televised on a tape-delayed basis on Saturday, March 5 at 11:00 a.m. on SPEED Channel. Next up is a stand-alone GS event, which will also be the series’ first-ever visit to Latin America, as the GS cars head to Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic, March 11-13, 2005.
